From April 1st, 2023 to March 31st, 2024, the BHA-Egypt program worked tirelessly to provide medical assistance to working equines in Egypt.

The team comprised 28 veterinarians, including seven clinic managers, who worked through a network of five static clinics, two office-based clinics, and 26 mobile clinic teams.

Through their dedicated efforts, the team managed to make 4,832 field visits to 171 communities across seven operational areas, reaching working equines in fourteen governorates, including Cairo, Giza, El Sharkia, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Menoufia Alexandria, El-Behira, Damietta, Kafr El Sheikh, Matrouh, Luxor, Qena, and Aswan.

The team’s efforts led to an outstanding record of 118,136 medical consultations, with a total of 161,851 treatments provided for different diseases. Furthermore, 1,554 animals were hospitalized, which amounted to 22,129 nights, with an impressive overall recovery rate of 87%. The team also performed 858 minor surgeries, responded to 81 emergency calls, and conducted 298 laboratory examinations. While the team’s efforts were commendable, the program had to make some tough decisions, resulting in 447 animals being euthanized.

Despite this, the team’s hard work and dedication made a significant impact on the welfare of working equines in Egypt.

BHA-Egypt conducted 63 awareness-raising and veterinary treatment campaigns in collaboration with GOVS, veterinary colleges, and veterinary syndicates. The campaigns were conducted in several areas inside and outside our coverage areas.

It provided medical consultation to 4738 animals with a total of 6545 treatments. 2333 animal owners attended the educational sessions, and 694 harnesses were maintained. Additionally, 502 animal hooves were trimmed, and 237 new wooden saddles, 1689 noseband covers, 182 hoof picks, and 2 net meshes were distributed.
